[Further Experiments in Sonic Occultism]
'Aural Magick' is a musical tribute to esoteric author, occult researcher, visual artist, and magician, Jan Fries.
This album consists of three tracks, each one being an aural representation of one of Fries' works. Further, the composition and performance of these pieces is informed by a fourth work, his concise, modern classic 'Visual Magick: A Manual of Freestyle Shamanism'. In the spirit of this book, the present album relies far less on the meticulously planned construction of my previous LP, instead being the product of multiple layers of intuitively-derived improvisations. Roughly speaking, it could be said that in the way in which my debut 'Void Meditations' is a product of the analytical intellectualising that might correspond with the element of air, 'Aural Magick' is rather a product of a spontaneity more indicative of fire.
I sincerely hope that you draw some kind of utility or enjoyment from this release, and I also hope that it inspires you to look further into the individual whose work inspired it: Jan Fries is, quite simply, a treasure. His writing is not only meticulously researched and overflowing with originality, but it is also full of playfulness and joy. Those of us who have been expanded, enlightened, or uplifted by his art and writings owe it to ourselves to support the works that currently exist so as to encourage and finance the wonderful work that he will do in the future. I make this statement here in relation to Fries specifically, but it equally applies to all of our favourite authors and artists.
While I do not believe that esoteric knowledge should be locked behind any kind of paywall (after all, "the law is for all"), I do think that we are ethically obligated to support --within our individual means, of course-- those who expand the field and by extension enrich our lives. It's a sad fact of the modern age that piracy means that all too few of these individuals are ever compensated adequately for their hard work. I think that in our excitement to gain access to any and all information that we can get our hands on, we all-too-easily forget that there is a very hard working individual behind its composition.
[Consider this: Robert Anton Wilson died flat broke. Really let that sink in. Are you one of those people whose life was dramatically altered by his work? If so, how many of his books did you only ever 'own' as scanned PDFs? Most of us, including myself, have been guilty of this in one way or another, but it's never too late to adopt an alternate attitude.]
As is no doubt clear, I highly recommend obtaining Fries' (and all other living occult authors') material via legal channels rather than downloading pirated scans. If only for purely selfish reasons, we should all want to support them so that we may be graced with more wonderful books!
Many, many thanks to every kind supporter and gracious follower.
